Introduction
Education occupies central importance in nations' presence and future. It enables us to consolidate our belief, preserve our identity and recognize the path wish leads us to success. It also enables us to construct our own civilization, formulate the stature of our own culture, determine the future of our nation and reinforce the structure of our country. Therefore, education is the responsibility of, not only the government, but also every group, class, organization, and individual in the society. Speaking about the reality of the education in our country, we talk about a fact of major concern that involves every citizen to participate and say his or her word (low educational attainment, p2, Aljawmri(.
The issue of the low education attainment of the high schools students in English learning is global concern that exists more or less in every society. According to Fizer Stone (one of the researchers in this respect) out of 100, there are 20 students who experience very low educational attainment and those results were confirmed by talking random samples of students from assorted societies and groups.
In Yemen and Arab countries, Studies and researchers have indicated that there is very low academic achievement in high schools in learning English language. As a result, general failure may happen which might lead in turn to social flop in general. It is worth mentioning that the educational process is not a sole right or responsibility of a certain sector or a specific department despite the fact that the educational department or sector is its main engine. Comprehensive process involves many elements and parties to accomplish its massage, aims, and plans thoroughly.
Thus, it would not be equitable to censure and consider one certain party to be encountered for such a critical and complicated issue without considering other vital elements and reasons. Hence, we could say that the low educational attainment is a comprehensive, integrated and interrelated process that requires every hand and every element. We will try in this research to determine the many reasons and causes that stand behind the low educational attainment and specify the causes and parts that interrelate in order to find possible solutions.
1.2 The problem Statement
Educational attainment is defined as the highest level of education an individual has successfully completed. Another term typically used in the literature is (highest) ‘educational qualification’. Educational attainment distinguishes individuals on a vertical scale, i.e. educational attainment categories can largely (although often not entirely) be ordered hierarchically.
The problem that all Yemeni Secondary Schools face nowadays in English learning is low-educational achievement among local students – students who are indigenous to the Republic of Yemen, as opposed to expatriate students – based on the final results of the academic past years. It is important to find out why tens of thousands of young people leave school with no or very few qualifications. Low achievement at teenage is associated with disadvantage and also a variety of outcomes by gender and ethnic group. Therefore, this study aims at finding the main reasons of low educational attainment for secondary schools students in English learning in Thamar City. This study also seeks at explaining the relation between low educational attainment and student and teacher.
1.3 The questions of study
This study mainly aims at answering the following questions:
1) What are the main reasons for low educational attainment for secondary schools students in English learning in Thamar City?
2) Is there a connection between low educational attainment and students?
3) Is there a connection between low educational attainment and teacher?
4) What are the suggestions or recommendations to resolve this problem?
1.4 The objectives of the study
This study aims at:
1) Explaining the main reasons of low educational attainment for secondary schools students in English learning in Thamar City.
2) Explaining the relation between low educational attainment and student.
3) Explaining the relation between low educational attainment and teacher.
4) Finding out suggestions and recommendations to solve this problem.
1.5 The importance of the study
This importance lies in the fact this study talks about:
1) One of the most important educational issues that concerns the minds of students and fathers, as it prevents school to accomplish its role well, besides it defines that this problem has the serious psychological impacts on students like the sense of disappointment.
2) This research will define or determine the main reasons of low educational attainment for secondary schools students in English learning and consequently finding out some suggestions and recommendations to solve this problem.
1.6 The study limitations
1) This study is confined to explaining and defining the main reasons of low educational attainment for secondary schools students in English learning in Thamar City.
2) This study is confined to secondary schools students in Thamar City.
3) This study took place in 2018-2019.
1.7 The definition of terms
1-The low educational attainment: Is the lag or lack of educational attainment among students in their intellectual abilities and drop of their annual achievement due to various reasons whereas the proportion becomes poor.
2-Secondary schools: Is a term used to describe the educational institution, where the final stage of compulsory education, known as secondary education. (Dictionary of education Mc. Graw-Hill)
